WALKING TOURS
|
A National Natural Landmark, and a
National Historic Landmark, Organ Cave is one of the longest caves in the
United States, with over 45 miles of mapped passageways and 200 passages yet
to be explored. First used by humans hundreds of years ago, Organ Cave was
first discovered by colonial pioneers in 1704. Today, Organ Cave offers
visitors a chance to see a well preserved, natural cave that has been left
as unaltered as possible.
Today, we offer hour and a half walking
tours of our cave year-round, no reservations necessary. Knowledgeable
guides will lead your tour and demonstrate for you the fundamentals of cave
ecology, and you will get to see many wondrous sights, including fossils,
stalactites and stalagmites, and a well preserved Civil War refinery used by
Confederate soldiers to mine saltpetre, a valuable mineral used in the
making of gunpowder, and can still be seen glittering on our cavern walls.
The temperature of the cave remains around 48 degrees summer and winter,
though the entrance drops to around 35 during the winter month. Bring a
light jacket for summer tours and a heavier one for winter tours. The
cool, clean cave air is a great way to beat the summer heat and is very
refreshing. We ask visitors to wear comfortable shoes or boots intended for
walking, running or hiking. Small children enjoy the cave and are able to
walk our paths well. We allow and suggest that you bring a camera for
photography of our cave and cameras with flash general produce good
pictures. We do recommend 400 or 800 speed film for regular cameras.
For those of you who are more
active and adventurous and don’t mind getting dirty, we offer our
Extended Exploring Expeditions. We offer a wide selection of
Extended Exploring Expeditions, from relatively easy tours to those
starting out in caving and are unsure what to expect, to true adventurous
of a lifetime to those who are in good shape and ready to challenge
themselves. All of our wild caving tours are led by two guides for each
trip. These tours must be booked in advance and secured with a credit
card. Our minimum age limits vary depending on which tour is booked and
different levels of skill and physical fitness are required for each trip.
If you have questions as to what tour is right for you, just give us a
